Jim Ruthka
Born in Toronto, Dr James T. Rutka was educated at Princeton University, Queen’s University Medical School, McGill University, the University of Toronto, and the University of California San Francisco, where he completed a PhD. He joined the Division of Neurosurgery at The Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto in 1990. His clinical and research interests focus on brain tumours and epilepsy. Dr Rutka has authored more than 600 peer‑reviewed publications and has received over $25 million in research grant funding.
In 1999, Dr Rutka was promoted to Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and appointed to the Dan Family Chair in Neurosurgery, a position he held until 2011. He has held numerous international leadership roles, including President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, President of the World Academy of Neurological Surgery, and President of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery. In 2011, he was appointed RS McLaughlin Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto.
Dr Rutka became the first Canadian Editor‑in‑Chief of the Journal of Neurosurgery in 2013. His many honours include Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada, Officer of the Order of Canada, the Cushing Medal, and multiple lifetime achievement awards. In 2026, he will serve as Medallist for the Neurosurgery Society of America.
